Smokeless Range Review

It is currently Summer time here in Texas, which means 100 degree weather for days. And as much as I love shooting, staying out in that heat is a beast, and indoor ranges are usually packed, loud, and have bad ventilation.  So during these summer months I spend less time outside shooting than I would like. In order to combat this I have been looking into different at home solutions. Being a big fan of airsoft and SIRT lasers I have come across the Smokeless Range by Laser-Ammo. What the Smokeless Range does that other similar products like L.A.S.R. does not, is allow you to use a projector or large screen TV. So instead of just placing a piece of paper, and pointing a camera to catch the light. This lets you practice against moving and reactive targets. Such as a Dueling Tree:

Knife Fighting Duels Jan 2015

January Knife Fighting Duels Highlights

Here is the highlight video of some knife dueling that we like to have at the end of the class. This type of work allows for some good fun knife fighting sparring while working on our knife fighting skills.

The rules of this one is called “Poison Knife” which means any contact to the arm would force a arm change. Any contact to the head, body or leg is considered a “lose”.

The main downside to this type of drill is you since you have two willing partners, that instead of going for the arm to disable, everyone pretty much swings for the head or body for the “kill shot”. A even larger risk is that it can encourage the potentially bad habit of ‘giving up’ after the first strike, instead of fighting until the end. We have drills that focuses on that point but they do come off more messy on video with less “clean hits”.

Overall

Some great fighting from everyone this month, lots of combinations that opened up head and body strikes.

Travis Haley Adaptive Kalash – Review

Haley AK

Travis Haley – Adaptive Kalash

Adaptive Kalash

Adaptive Kalash is Travis Haley’s Instructional DVD about running the AK rifle. I watched this using Panteao’s subscription service.

Haley starts off Adaptive Kalash with a introduction on the AK platform, and maybe its just me but he seamed to start off pretty negative about it. He talks about his “respect” for the platform in one sentence and then goes on about how many women and children that it has killed over its years. “Keep a open mind” about this “battle field pick up” he likes to repeat. During this intro he says more negative things this rifle has done, as if it was the rifles doing and not its users, then he talks about anything else. Kind of a bummer way to start i think.

After he covers the four safety rules, he starts digging more into the actual AK rifle. He goes into a good overview of what to look for when you are picking one out and why they have such varying price points. It was nice to see that he likes to run a more stock AK than his tricked out ARs tend to be. He talks about looking out for crooked sights, sloppy hand-guards, different barrels, just a good overview on what to look for. I thought he would have gone more into the fact that the AK has to have a certain amount of US parts and more into the actual importing of the rifle but its understandable why he did not. I feel like here would have been a good chance to go more into its history.
