Context is EVERYTHING. ~ Steve Miles
ALIVE! Combatives and self defense prioritizes the use of weapons for personal self defense. Focusing primarily on knife and firearm usage (but not just limited to). We use an ultra-functional training methodology that builds skill fast, delivering a single set of blade-based actions to fight with, and against, any weapon and empty hands.
Our goal is to get you effective fast, we want you to be able to defend yourself effectively in hours (or less) than months (or years!) in other martial art styles. We can do this through the use of weapons such as a knife, and even better, a handgun. Learning to be truly effective empty handed is a excellent endeavor but it can take months and years to be able to truly combat effective. For a lot of people they just don't have the time to train. Does a woman tell her stalker to hold off a few years while she gets her martial arts black belt? Do you tell your attacker that they cant use a weapon because you haven't reached that belt rank yet? Here students will learn how to effectively defend themselves fast with the tools they can legal carry. The skills learned and acquired can just as easily be used empty handed as with a weapon.
ALIVE! Combatives works on a alternating gun and knife combatives curriculum. One week will be focused on knifes, the next on guns, then back to knives and so on. Everything is taught in a spiral topical fashion to ensure that every topic is covered and often.
ALIVE! Knife Fighting
Contact on contact will show you what "might be", anything else is just an assumption. ~ Sonny Puzikas
ALIVE! Knife Fighting teaches you to not only be a effective self defense knife fighter but how to defend empty hand against the knife. How to access and deploy your knives, strike and counter strike, all the way up to finishes and take downs are all covered. All explained in simple and effective terms.
We start every class with a oppositional warm up where we go through 7 common scenarios: hold ups, duelling, assaults, blocks, clinches, corners, and ground. This warm up sets the pace for the rest of the class giving each student a training goal for the day. Did you lead to far in the duel? Not enough? From there we get into our three training phrases: Learning, Training, and Opposition. The learning phase sets up the topic and the corresponding drills. The students then take the topic and drill and jump between the training phase and the oppositional phase. The training phase allows them to practice and fine tune their skills while the oppositional phase allows them to test it with force. From the "oppositional test" they go back to the training phase to work on mistakes. This allows us to spend little time teaching (talking/demonstrating) and a lot of time actually doing. The last 10-15 minutes of the class is a "oppositional test" against the instructor to check the students progress.
ALIVE! Gun Fighting
The gun has been called the great equalizer, meaning that a small person with a gun is equal to a large person. ~ Ronald Reagen
ALIVE! Gunfighting is the next step beyond basic pistol and concealed handgun training. Much more than just shooting static targets, ALIVE! instruction prioritizes the use of fully resistant training partners to develop functional defensive pistol skills. Students will train in the studio, at a private range, and in other locations using live, airsoft, and dummy pistols as appropriate. This is not rehashed SWAT and military team tactics but are specificity oriented to the lone shooter. Firearms (pistol and long guns) manipulation, accessing and deployment, malfunctions, take offs, retention, disarms, CQB, cornering, vehicles, medical topics and more are all covered.
Just like with the Knife Fighting portion we start every class with a oppositional warm up where we go through 7 common scenarios: hold ups, take-offs, assaults, blocks, clinches, corners, and ground. From there we get into our three training phrases: Learning, Training, and Opposition. The learning phase sets up the topic and the corresponding drills. The students then take the topic and drills, and practice. We will then as a group depending on the topic, go into the "oppositional testing" phase with airsoft. Firearms though being a projectile weapons still need to be tested with opposition. To do so we regularly train with airsoft and force on force. From the "oppositional test" they go back to the training phase to work on mistakes. This allows us to spend little time teaching (talking/demonstrating) and a lot of time actually doing. The last 10-20 minutes is final oppositional work with the use of airsoft often with a run through the airsoft shoot house.
Armed Combat and Tactics ACT
Fort Worth Combatives is proud to be one of the only Armed Combat and Tactics ACT certified schools in the country. ACT is a weapon based style developed in Israel and is used by Krav Maga groups all around the world. Armed Combat and Tactics ACT work with both close range weapons such as knives, batons, kubatons, machetes (bolos), along with long range weapons such as katanas, European long-swords, long and short staffs, spears and more! Full contact sparring to pressure test anything and everything is the name of the game in ACT. We have taken the very best from kenjutsu, ninjutsu, escrima, kali, boxing, Jogo do pau, eastern and western sword arts, and more; we then put them to the ultimate test of full contact sparring, if we could not pull it off under true pressure testing then we threw it out!
