Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Fort Worth
Beginner-Friendly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Fort Worth

Looking for a place to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without being thrown into the deep end?
Our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu programs in Fort Worth is built around a structured, beginner-friendly approach to BJJ with an emphasis on practical self-defense, strong fundamentals, and learning in a safe and cooperative environment.
You do not need previous martial arts experience, exceptional fitness, or any knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu to begin. New students start with the fundamentals and develop their skills progressively as they become more comfortable with grappling and physical resistance.
At Fort Worth Combatives, there are two primary ways to begin Gracie Jiu-Jitsu:
Gracie Combatives — our co-ed beginner Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense fundamentals program.
Women Empowered — our women-only self-defense program based on Gracie Jiu-Jitsu principles and techniques.
Both programs are designed specifically to give new students a comfortable entry point into training.
Gracie Combatives — Co-Ed Beginner Jiu-Jitsu
Gracie Combatives®, is the official adult beginner self-defense program of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and the primary starting point for new students in our co-ed program.
Students learn 36 foundational techniques selected for their practicality and effectiveness in real self-defense situations. Each class covers both standing and ground skills through structured drills and progressive partner exercises.
Unlike many traditional BJJ classes, beginners are not immediately thrown into competitive sparring. Training is cooperative, structured, and injury-conscious, allowing students to develop their fundamentals, coordination, and confidence before adding greater resistance.
If you're brand new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gracie Combatives provides a clear starting point and a structured path for developing the skills you'll need for continued Jiu-Jitsu training.
Best for: BJJ beginners, practical self-defense, fundamentals, and students looking for a structured, lower-pressure introduction to Jiu-Jitsu.

Women Empowered — Women's Self-Defense
Women Empowered®, is the official women-only self-defense curriculum developed by the Gracie family, using practical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu principles to address common threats and situations women may face.
Across a structured 15-lesson curriculum, students learn defenses against 20 common attacks, including grabs, choke holds, bear hugs, ground pins, and other close-range threats. Techniques emphasize leverage, timing, movement, and positional control rather than relying on size, strength, or athletic ability.
Like Gracie Combatives, training is beginner-friendly and highly cooperative. Students can develop their skills through structured partner practice without being thrown immediately into competitive sparring or an unnecessarily intense training environment.
For women who are interested in self-defense or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but aren't sure about starting in a traditional co-ed BJJ class, Women Empowered provides an approachable place to begin.
Best for: Women’s self-defense, BJJ beginners, practical skills, and women looking for a comfortable introduction to Jiu-Jitsu.

Already Have Grappling Experience?

If you already have experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Judo, or another grappling art, Gracie Combatives may not be the best starting point for you. The program is intentionally designed around beginner fundamentals and structured self-defense training.
Experienced grapplers—and students primarily interested in live training, athletic development, or competition—may find our Sambo program to be a better fit.
Our Sport and Combat Sambo classes bring together students from a variety of grappling backgrounds and include throws, takedowns, submissions, striking, and regular training against resisting partners. BJJ practitioners are welcome, and many find Sambo provides an opportunity to add new skills and approaches while continuing their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training elsewhere.
Not sure which program fits your experience and goals? Contact us and we'll help point you in the right direction.

Gracie Combatives is designed to build the foundation for continued training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Students who complete the Combatives curriculum and evaluation can continue into the Gracie Master Cycle, the advanced curriculum used for continued technical development and progression toward future belt ranks.
Master Cycle expands beyond the fundamentals introduced in Combatives with a much larger curriculum covering positional control, submissions, escapes, transitions, and continued development of both self-defense and Jiu-Jitsu skills.
Unlike Gracie Combatives, Master Cycle is not intended as an introductory class for new students. It is the next stage of training for students who have developed the fundamentals and want to continue their long-term Gracie Jiu-Jitsu progression.
For new students, the first step is simple: start with Gracie Combatives and build from there.
