Gracie Combatives

Beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense

Gracie Combatives®, is the official adult beginner self-defense program of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and the curriculum taught in our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals classes in Fort Worth. It is designed for people who want a clear and structured place to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

The program focuses on 36 foundational techniques selected for their practicality and effectiveness in real self-defense situations. Students develop both standing and ground skills while building the fundamental movements and positions that provide a foundation for continued Jiu-Jitsu training.

Each one-hour class covers two focused lessons—one standing self-defense technique and one ground technique. Skills are broken into simple, repeatable drills and progressive partner exercises so beginners can concentrate on learning without being overwhelmed.

Training takes place in a safe, cooperative, and beginner-friendly environment. Partners work with each other rather than immediately competing against each other, allowing students to develop coordination, technique, and confidence before adding greater resistance.

Classes can be taken in any order, so you don't need to wait for a new session or curriculum cycle to begin.

No previous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, martial arts, or grappling experience is required to start.

Why Gracie Combatives Is Different From a Typical BJJ Class

Unlike many Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, Gracie Combatives® is designed specifically as a starting point for beginners.

The program follows a structured 36-technique curriculum focused on practical self-defense and the fundamental positions, movements, and skills of Jiu-Jitsu. Rather than immediately placing new students into competitive sparring, classes use cooperative drills and progressive partner exercises to develop technique and confidence first.

This allows beginners to learn how Jiu-Jitsu works against common real-world threats while building a strong foundation for more advanced BJJ training later.

As students become comfortable with the techniques, resistance is gradually introduced so they can learn to apply their skills against a less cooperative partner.

This approach makes Gracie Combatives particularly well suited for complete beginners, recreational students, and adults interested in practical self-defense who want to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a structured and lower-pressure environment.

If you're already an experienced BJJ practitioner or primarily interested in competitive grappling, our Sambo program may be a better fit for your goals.

A Clear Path for Progress

Our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals classes give new students a defined curriculum and a clear goal to work toward rather than simply attending classes and wondering when they're ready to advance. Students work through the official Gracie Combatives® curriculum as they build their foundational skills.

The program is built around 36 essential techniques taught through a structured series of lessons. As students become familiar with the complete curriculum, they can begin preparing for the Gracie Combatives evaluation and demonstrate their understanding of the fundamental techniques.

Completing the Combatives curriculum isn't the end of the program—it establishes the foundation for continued training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Students who want to continue beyond the fundamentals can progress into the Gracie Master Cycle, where they expand their technical knowledge, begin working with greater resistance, and continue their long-term progression toward future belt ranks.

There is no need to rush through the curriculum. Students can train at their own pace, repeat lessons as needed, and focus on developing skills they understand and can apply rather than simply collecting techniques.

Your first goal is simple: learn the fundamentals, build confidence using them, and work toward completing Gracie Combatives.
